Embracing Secular Rituals
Discovering the benefits of rituals by celebrating the Solar Calendar
A Year of Secular Rituals for Personal and Community Growth
This year I’m starting some new rituals.
A lot of them hopefully.
As an atheist that’s a bit of a surprise to me. But this has been bothering me for a while now. This idea of ritual.
It started with thinking about the benefits of habits and the entire Atomic Habits movement which in turn got me pondering about the difference between habits and rituals which eventually had me wondering what I, as an agnostic atheist, am missing out on by not having rituals in my life.
Without shared beliefs in any particular spiritual focus or religious identity, atheists run the risk of having no anchor or point of commonality in life to share the human experiences and milestones that are typically celebrated through faith and worship.
But that doesn’t have to be the case. The sense of spirituality felt by religious people can easily be found in a sense of awe in our place in nature. We’ve got an entire earth, an entire universe even, to celebrate through a shared history and belonging that transcends individual religions.
Certainly as I negotiate the sometimes-overwhelming pressures of modern life, the constant barrage of things that demand my attention, the cacophony of life’s white noise that isolates me from any sense of groundedness, I find I have a strong underlying desire for meaningful connection - connection with the earth and connection with my family, friends and community.

Why Set Up Secular Rituals?
For those of us who may not adhere to traditional religious practices, creating secular rituals based on the solar calendar offers a way to connect with the many benefits of rituals that have been practiced by people for thousands of years.
Rituals, even from a non-religious standpoint, provide numerous psychological and social advantages. They promote mindfulness by directing attention to the present through symbolic gestures. Rituals offer structure and predictability and can alleviate anxiety through an enhanced a sense of control. For the same reasons, they can help in managing emotions, allowing for constructive and shared processing of complex feelings.
Moreover, engaging in rituals, especially communal ones, nurtures a deeper sense of community and belonging. They establish shared experiences and traditions, solidifying common values and reinforcing our social ties. Ultimately, rituals can satisfy the innate human desire for purpose and meaning, lending significance to daily activities and linking us to a greater, shared experience.
The Solar Calendar: A Perfect Secular Cycle
The solar calendar, with its solstices and equinoxes, offers a sense of structure, belonging, and reflection. They help us mark the passage of time, celebrate achievements, and reflect on our goals and values.
By aligning our rituals with these natural cycles, we can create a sense of continuity and connection with the earth and cosmos.

How to Set Up Your Secular Rituals
Identify Your Themes: Start by thinking about what themes resonate with you. Renewal? Growth? Gratitude? Reflection? Choose themes that align with the solar events.
Plan Your Rituals: Decide on specific activities that embody these themes. Journaling, community service, empathy circles, and gratitude letters are all great starting points.
Gather Your Materials: Whether it’s a journal for self-reflection, crafting supplies for making gratitude gifts, or simply a cozy space for meditation, make sure you have what you need.
Invite Others: Secular rituals can be personal, but they can also be a wonderful way to build community. Invite friends and family to join you in your celebrations and reflections.
Reflect and Adjust: After each ritual, take some time to reflect on what worked and what didn’t. Adjust your plans as needed to make your rituals more meaningful.
